While a growing number of  ads for nutritional supplements claiming to boost immune system functioning may tempt you, resist the urge. They’re simply the snake oil of the coronavirus age. Instead consider how your lifestyle can help you maintain  a strong immune system. Healthy eating, regular exercise, and adequate sleep can all play a role.

Unfortunately, there is no one food that can magically defend against viruses but eating a variety of
nutrient-packed choices  may make a difference as shortfalls in various nutrients can impair how your immune system works. Moderating your alcohol intake  is also recommended.
Here are some smart selections to put on your menu:

  • Plenty of colourful fruits and vegetables

These are chock full of  nutrients, such as vitamin C and colourful pigments like beta carotene, all of which may have an impact. The less colourful ones, such as garlic, onions and ginger, though,  not only make foods palate-pleasing but may also contribute to your defense system.

  • Zinc-rich foods

Zinc, an important mineral for combatting infections, is found in an assortment of foods including meat, poultry, seafood, pulses (dried peas and beans), dairy products, nuts and seeds, whole grains and fortified breakfast cereals.

  • Vitamin D supplements

This vitamin, also known as the sunshine vitamin, is in short supply at this time of year and it can be difficult to meet requirements with food alone. Some experts recommend taking a 1,000 IU supplement daily.

Decrease stress levels
You’re not alone in worrying about all things corona-related but keep in mind  relieving stress levels is also key in maintaining a healthy immune system. That’s where exercise comes in: it can also lower the levels of stress hormones in your bloodstream. In addition, exercise itself has also been shown to have beneficial effects on how your immune system functions.

If you can’t go out for a walk, why not put on some music and dance around or check online for some great fitness ideas. And lastly, decreased stress levels can make for better sleep, another factor in keeping your immunity up.

Immunity is on everyone’s mind these days and while there may not be a silver bullet solution, every step you can take may help.
